April 2022 California Personal Income Tax Daily Revenue Tracker

April 15 is the normal annual personal income tax (PIT) payment deadline. However, for the two prior consecutive years, the Franchise Tax Board extended the deadline in conformity with the Internal Revenue Service in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the state and federal PIT payment and filing deadline was May 17. For 2022, April 18 is the deadline as April 15 is Good Friday and a banking holiday.

Last fiscal year, PIT totaling $143.75 billion, accounted for 69.97 percent of all state General Fund revenues. Of those receipts, 10.53 percent arrived during the month of May, compared to 19.5 percent in April 2019, pre-pandemic. (The FY 2020-21 PIT total includes approximately $22 billion in taxes deferred from FY 2019-20 due to the filing deadline extension to July 2020.)

General Fund PIT receipts for the current fiscal year (FY 2021-22) totaled $99.01 billion through March 31, which was $10.50 billion, or 11.85 percent, higher than anticipated in Governor Gavin Newsom’s FY 2022-23 budget proposal released in January.

The FY 2022-23 proposed budget estimated April 2022 PIT collections would total $13.63 billion. PIT receipts expected in April represent 10.96% of total General Fund revenues of $124.32 billion anticipated for the entire 2021-22 fiscal year.

The chart below compares the running total to the estimate of April PIT receipts. The total consists of PIT receipts minus refunds and Golden State Stimulus.
