SACRAMENTO — Today, Controller Malia M. Cohen issued a statement on the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson:

“I join millions across our nation in mourning the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson who was a towering figure in the fight for civil rights, economic justice, and human dignity.

Reverend Jackson dedicated his life to expanding opportunity and demanding that our institutions live up to their highest ideals. From standing alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to leading the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he never wavered in his belief that every person deserves a voice, a fair chance, and a seat at the table. His enduring call to ‘Keep hope alive’ challenged us not only to believe in change, but to do the work required to achieve it.

His leadership inspired generations of public servants, advocates, and community leaders including many of us who continue to work toward a more just and equitable society.

To his family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life, I extend my deepest condolences. May we honor his legacy not only with words, but with action — by continuing the work to build communities where opportunity is real, fairness is foundational, and hope is sustained for all.”
