Social Media Policy

The purpose of this social media policy is to enable the State Controller’s Office to post matters of public interest concerning the office’s programs, activities, news stories and photos, and to enable members of the public to comment on those posts.

In order to ensure, to the extent possible, that the comments by the public to any post are relevant to the subject matter posted and recognizing further that the public comments do not necessarily represent the views of the State Controller, or the State Controller’s Office and further does not infringe upon the rights of others or does not in any way suggest the Controller’s imprimatur, endorsement, or acquiescence in any comment made by members of the public the following policy is effective immediately.

Individuals who post on the State Controller’s Office’s social media accounts may not:

  • Post threats of physical violence towards any person or organization.
  • Post content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party, including but not limited to infringement of a copyright, trademark, or any registered mark.
  • Post content containing any unsolicited commercial solicitation (i.e. spam, junk mail, chain letters, pyramid schemes, or other promotional materials).
  • Post content containing or linking to malicious software (malware) such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, spyware, adware, or any other unwanted software.
  • Post content that is likely to incite imminent lawless action.

The State Controller’s Office may remove content that violates these guidelines. The State Controller, the State Controller’s Office and/or its executives and employees are not responsible for, and neither endorses nor opposes, comments placed on its social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and YouTube) by visitors.

Any comments or other content posted or submitted to the State Controller’s social media accounts for posting, as well as information pertaining to the State Controller’s social media accounts’ users and visitors, may be public records subject to disclosure pursuant to the California Public Records Act (Cal. Gov. Code § 6250 et seq.).
