Controller Sends Schools $1 Billion in Lottery Funds for the Year
10/1/2009
916-445-2636
SACRAMENTO - State Controller John Chiang today announced that payments from the Lottery Education Fund to school districts, educational institutions and State agencies for the 2008-09 fiscal year totaled $1.04 billion.
Payments to K-12 schools and community colleges are made to county treasurers, who then distribute the money to school districts. Funds for the University of California and Hastings College of the Law are sent directly to those institutions. The funds for State departments are deposited directly into their accounts.
The Controller’s Office makes quarterly payments based on Lottery income and unclaimed on-line prizes. Proposition 20, which voters passed in March 2000, requires that a certain percentage of any increase in lottery funds over the base 1997-98 fiscal year be used to purchase instructional materials.
For the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, the Controller apportioned $259.0 million from the Lottery Education Fund.
