Tax Preparation Assistance Locations

Controller John Chiang works in partnership with community organizations to help provide free tax preparation services for low- and moderate-income taxpayers. 2011 Locations and Dates

State Controller John Chiang once again has opened the doors of his Los Angeles office to provide free tax assistance to low-and-moderate income taxpayers. This assistance is provided as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program designed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

• Taxpayers can avoid tax preparation fees, and IRS-certified volunteers will help them determine if they are eligible for the important Earned Income Tax Credit. That credit alone is worth up to $5,666 for working families.
• During his first four years in office, the Controller’s volunteers helped return more than $3 million in refunds and credits to taxpayers.
• The downtown Los Angeles office is located at 777 S. Figueroa Street, Suite 4800.
• Appointments are available between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Spanish, Mandarin, Bengali, Hindi and Urdu language support is available. Taxpayers should call (213) 833-6010 to request an appointment.

Interested taxpayers should call ahead to make an appointment. They need to bring a photo ID; Social Security Card or Individual Taxpayer Identification number for all family members; all W-2 and 1099 forms (if any); and other income/expense information, including total school tuition fees and expenses, total expenses paid for child/day care (and day care provider tax identification number), and bank account and routing number if direct deposit of any refund check is desired.
