Watch Your Mail for Notices About Unclaimed Property

Sample letter

If you get a letter about unclaimed property in the coming weeks, make sure to read it!

From January 13 through February 10, Controller John Chiang is mailing notices to Californians with unclaimed property, including money, stock and safe deposit box contents.

The letters, which look like this and come in an envelope that looks like this, offer specific steps to reclaim your property directly from businesses such as banks or utility companies that have reported the property as unclaimed.

If you do not contact the business before the deadline stated in the letter, the property will be sent to the Controller's Office for safekeeping. Owners, or their heirs, can claim property from the Controller's Office at any time in the future.

If you have trouble contacting the business, please click here and look under "Updated business contacts" for the most current contact information.
